Marathon SAR Watch

I really like the sturdy look of this awesome tool watch, the Marathon SAR (Search And Rescue). I think it is only available for military people, but Cousin Steve might be able to get one... About $700.

Christopher Ward Aviators

Interesting UK company doing some aviators and other cool, reasonably cheap watches. I like the new Battle of Britain collection.

Aviation Watches

I'd really like to get some aviation style watches soon. Below is some research I have done on them.

Steinhart - about $460

debaufre unknown model, but like the style

Techne Sparrowhawk

Another small batch watch company that interests me is Techne, maker of the super cool Sparrowhawk aviation watch (about $430 shipped as of right now).
Sparrow Hawk Overcoat riveted leather

Magrette

The more I learn about fine timepieces, the less I am impressed with the cookie cutter clones out there (you know who you are), who charge thousands for virtually the same watch as their competitor, with only superficial differences in style, finish, features. More and more I am interested in the "small batch", independent watchmakers out there who have tons of skill and passion, but perhaps little to no marketing budget. As I find them, I will post them here, and as I can afford it, I will support them by purchasing their little works of art.

A great example of this type of company is Magrette, a New Zealand based watch outfit specializing in very unique, locally influenced , and limited edition designs. Check out www.magrette.com to see their work and learn the story behind the watches. While I'd love some of the beautifully engraved masterpieces Magrette offers, I'll probably start with some of these:
Regattare PVD $395
Moana Pacific Diver$515

$345

Latest Acquisition - Seiko Diver

Here is a pic of my latest purchase, a 1996 vintage Seiko SKX007K.
Note the patina on the dial. Looks nice. Probably going to try a NATO
strap soon.

IWC iPhone app is cool

I recently downloaded the IWC app for my iPhone. One of the fun
features is the ability to virtually try on their timepieces. I love
the Spitfire Chronograph. Check it out.

The Seiko White Knight is Awesome

Seiko white knight (SKXA47) is hard to find but kicks ass for under $300. Let me know if you have one for sale...

This blog will be for tracking links to cool watch companies, products, reviews, wish lists, other blog posts, grail watch pictures, etc. I'll also create entries specific to topics I am studying, such as Seiko diver mods. Other topics will be my ramblings, rants, and reviews. I'm no horological expert, but I have my opinions for what they are worth.

Wound up and ready to go

I have been keeping a Google Docs document of all the watch stuff I am interested in. This morning, my wife Corinne mentioned that she might start a blog about something of interest to her (no spoilers here), and it got me thinking that I could use a blog for my watch watching too. I'll post a link to her blog once it's up and running.

But anyway, back to me.... I have been a wrist watch fanatic for a few years now. It started several years ago with the purchase of my first "real" watch, a Tag Heuer Formula 1. It was a cool watch, but I really didn't know much about fine timepieces at the time. Moreover, I hadn't fallen in love with automatic movements. So... after about a year with the Tag, I sold it and moved up to my first serious watch, the Breitling Superocean (black face, rubber dive strap, and the ETA automatic movement). It had all the bells and whistles like the double coated anti-reflective sapphire crystal, helium release valve, tough ass case and unidirectional bezel. This watch was the bomb. I wore it proudly for a year or two, until tough financial times forced me to sell it to another watch lover on Craigslist. At least it went to a good home.
